Ashley Moniz was called to the Bar in June 2020. He completed his Honours BA in Political Science and Drama Studies at Glendon College, while also obtaining a Certificate in Law and Social Thought. Ashley then completed his Juris Doctor at the University of Ottawa, taking a particular interest in oral advocacy, dispute resolution, employment & labour law, and Indigenous law. After passing the licensing exams, he entered Ryerson’s Law Practice Program and worked at a Trademark boutique law firm in Ottawa.
Ashley has always been involved beyond work and academics. At Glendon, he spent two years as the Arts & Entertainment Section Editor of Pro Tem Newspaper and the Instrumental Director, and then the General Manager, of the Glendon Musical Ensemble. In law school, he participated in both the Nelligan O’Brien Payne First Year Moot (2016) and Weiler Mediation Competition (2018). He was also the Vice President of Finance for the Employment and Labour Law Student Society (2018-2019).
In the Law Practice Program, he was elected to the Law Practice Program Candidates’ Association Executive Team. In this role, Ashley ran the LPPCA Career Clinic, coordinating cover letter and résumé review and mock interviews for candidates searching for LPP work placements. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Ashley established the LPP’s first Summer Career Clinic to help even more candidates to secure placements under the pandemic’s economic uncertainty. Under Ashley’s leadership, the Summer Clinic had over 30 volunteers assist about 100 candidates in less than a month.
In his first year as Assistant Director of IP Osgoode, the IPilogue, under his management, published twice as many articles as it did during the prior year. For the IP Innovation Clinic, Ashley regularly touches base with the Clinic Coordinators and student volunteers to ensure steady progress on case work and deal with higher-level communication and operations issues that arise. In March 2021, he worked with three partner organizations to draft and submit proposals for three successful grants through Mitacs (with Prof. D’Agostino as Principal Investigator), the first ones received at York University, as part of their Business Strategy Internship program.
Outside of work, Ashley is very dedicated to healthy eating and exercise. He also enjoys good movies and TV shows and is always happy for recommendations. Even while in lockdown, Ashley continued to do what he could to connect with other professionals and build his network.
