IPOsgoode and everyone in the legal and academic community mourns the passing of Peter Wardell Hogg, Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School.
Peter Hogg was Canada’s leading constitutional law scholar and the author of Constitutional Law of Canada (Carswell, 4th ed., 1997). As a widely recognized and respected leading constitutional law scholar, professor and counsel in constitutional law cases, Peter Hogg was cited by the Supreme Court of Canada more than twice as much as any other author. Peter Hogg’s career was most impressive and showcased his unmatched commitment to legal education and Canadian constitutional law.
IP Osgoode would like to express our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Peter Hogg. He is fondly remembered by the Osgoode community as a man of great kindness, candour and humility.
Peter Hogg’s formidable legacy will endure his passing and will continue to inspire many generations in Canada and beyond.

My condolences to the entire Osgoode community. I remember Peter fondly as not only an inspiring scholar in his own right but also a steadfast supporter of the IP program at Osgoode Hall. His kindness and generosity were instrumental in launching the careers of so many young lawyers and academics, including me. He was both a giant and a gentleman – a rare combination – and will be sadly missed.
